Honouring Our Roots: Black History Month at CANOWESCA
When: Every February.
Who it's for: The whole community members, families, and friends of the Northwest diaspora.
Every February, the Cameroon Association of North Westerners in Canada pauses to look backward before looking forward. Black History Month is one of the most meaningful dates on our community calendar not because it's the only time we celebrate our heritage, but because it's a dedicated moment to reflect, together, on where we come from and what that history still asks of us.
Why we mark this month
For a diaspora community, identity can quietly erode across generations if it isn't actively nurtured. Children born in Canada may grow up fluent in hockey and winter but distant from the stories that shaped their grandparents. Black History Month gives us a structured, intentional reason to close that gap.
It's a chance to honor the legacies, struggles, and triumphs of people of African descent, not as a history lesson confined to a textbook, but as a living conversation between generations. We talk about resilience. We talk about leadership. We talk about the individuals, movements, and everyday acts of courage that built the path we now walk.
Why it matters for the next generation
The North West region carries centuries of tradition, and Canada is now home to that legacy's newest chapter. Black History Month is where we deliberately hand the torch forward not as a burden, but as an inheritance worth being proud of. Every showcase, every story told, is an invitation to our youth: this is where you come from, and this is what you're capable of.
What to expect
Our Black History Month programming leans into the things that make history feel alive:
- Educational forums where members share stories, research, and lived experience
- Art exhibitions spotlighting African and Afro-Canadian creativity
- Storytelling sessions, often intergenerational, where elders and youth trade perspectives
- Cultural showcases music, dress, and tradition brought into the room, not just talked about
Join Us
CANOWESCA members and friends of the community are welcome at every Black History Month event. If you're new to the association, February is one of the warmest times of year to walk through the door for the first time the room is already full of stories waiting to be shared with you.
