Two Flags, One Heart: Celebrating Canada Day with CANOWESCA

When: July 1st, every year Who it's for: Members, newcomers, and neighbors across the diaspora

There's a particular kind of joy that comes from belonging to two places at once. On July 1st, the Cameroon Association of North Westerners in Canada joins the rest of the country in celebrating the freedom, diversity, and inclusion that define Canada while carrying our Northwest roots proudly into the celebration.

More than a public holiday

For many of our members, Canada Day means something layered. It's a chance to say thank you to a country that opened its doors to newcomers building new lives, to families reunited after long journeys, to a generation of Canadian-born kids who call this home without ever having to explain it twice. And it's also a chance to remind ourselves, and everyone around us, that being Canadian and being proudly North West Cameroonian were never mutually exclusive.

What the day looks like

Our Canada Day celebration blends patriotism with multicultural unity, and it shows in everything we do:

  • Cultural performances that bring North West music, dance, and dress into a distinctly Canadian summer
  • Flag parades, red-and-white alongside the colours of home
  • Shared meals, where a Canada Day barbecue plate might just as easily hold jollof rice or achu as it does a burger

It's a day built for bridges between generations, between cultures, and between the country our members grew up in and the one many now call home.

Why this celebration matters to us

Integration doesn't mean giving something up. CANOWESCA's Canada Day gathering is proof that you can plant your flag firmly in Canadian soil without ever loosening your grip on where you came from. For newcomers especially, it's often one of the first times they feel that truth in their bones surrounded by people who understand exactly what that duality feels like.

Be part of it

Whether you've been in Canada for decades or just landed this year, our Canada Day celebration is open arms and open tables. Bring your family, bring a dish if you'd like, and come celebrate the country we've built a life in together.
