Giving Back: Our Annual Shelter Outreach
When: August, every year.
Who it's for: Local shelters and community members in need, with every CANOWESCA member invited to take part
Not every CANOWESCA event is about celebration. Some are about responsibility, and our annual Shelter Outreach is where that responsibility becomes action. Each August, we turn part of our attention outward, toward the neighbours in our wider Canadian community who need support the most.
Why we do this
CANOWESCA was built on the idea that community shouldn't have a border drawn around it. Our members have been welcomed into Canada, supported through settlement, and given the chance to build new lives here. Giving back to local shelters is one of the clearest ways we know to say thank you, and to model, for the next generation, that solidarity should extend beyond our own membership rolls.
What the outreach looks like today
Right now, in our current capacity, our focus is practical and direct: providing essential groceries to local shelters. It's not a flashy gesture, but it's a meaningful one, the kind of support that goes straight toward the things people need most.
We're honest about where we are: this is a modest but committed annual pledge, not a large-scale program yet. And we're just as honest about where we're headed  with optimism and determination, we envision growing this effort year over year, extending our reach to deliver greater relief and more meaningful change.
An invitation, not just an announcement
Shelter Outreach works best as a community effort, not a committee project. Members are encouraged to contribute whether that's groceries, time, or simply spreading the word so more hands are on deck each August.
If your organization or business is interested in partnering with us on future outreach efforts, we'd welcome the conversation.
The bigger picture
Every can of food, every bag of groceries, is a small act of kindness, but repeated every year, by a growing community, those small acts add up to something real. That's the vision behind Shelter Outreach: not one big moment, but a steady, growing commitment.
